J.R.R. Tolkien: I photographed the writer J.R.R. Tolkien in January, 1973 in his rooms at Merton College, Oxford, England. It was part of a book that I did on his friend and colleague C.S. Lewis. Tolkien died 9 months later. I found him to be a warm and friendly man who graciously gave me all the time I needed to do the photographs for the book.

Catherine Haughton: Catherine was a young actress and the niece of Katherine Hepburn. GLAMOUR Magazine asked me to do some portraits of her to accompany a piece about her co-starring with Sidney Poitier in the newly released movie “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?” The photographs were taken in her aunt’s garden on the east side of Manhattan.

Janis Ian: Janis Ian was 16 years old and had written and sung “Society’s Child” which had become a huge national hit. I was assigned to photograph her for LIFE Magazine and this was one of the pictures from that story.
