Bob Dylan - A Photography Project by Douglas R. Gilbert

Bob Dylan: In July of 1964, one year before his music changed from acoustic to electric, I photographed Bob Dylan for LOOK magazine. I spent time with him at his home in Woodstock, New York, in Greenwich Village, and at the Newport Folk Festival. The story was never published. After reviewing the proposed layout, the editors declared Dylan to be “too scruffy for a family magazine” and killed the story.

Available from Da Capo Press: “Forever Young: Photographs of Bob Dylan” by Douglas R. Gilbert with text by Dave Marsh.

Portraits - A Photography Project by Douglas R. Gilbert

Portraits: I photographed the writer J.R.R. Tolkien in January, 1973 in his rooms at Merton College, Oxford, England. It was part of a book that I did on his friend and colleague C.S. Lewis. Tolkien died 9 months later. I found him to be a warm and friendly man who graciously gave me all the time I needed to do the photographs for the book. (5 photographs)

Italy - A Photography Project by Douglas R. Gilbert

Italy: An ongoing project photographing the Umbrian hilltown of Orvieto and the surrounding countryside, including parts of nearby Tuscany. It began with photographing the unfamiliar, but while there the first time I was struck by the quality of light as experienced in the towns and countryside. What began as curiosity has become a deeper exploration of land and cityscape, and always the light. (26 photographs)

Gardens - A Photography Project by Douglas R. Gilbert

Gardens: An unconventional look at growth, death and renewal through photographs of six private gardens throughout the four seasons. Plant life, even when controlled and arranged in domesticated landscape has a beauty, tenacity, wildness, and humor that is evident through the year. These photographs are from gardens in northeastern Massachusetts. (21 photographs)
